Babies still are being born alive in botched abortions and left to die in hospitals across the country, a medical resident confirmed this month. In a letter first shared with Live Action News, the female resident described her shock and horror at finding a beautiful baby girl who was left to die in a bassinet during one of her OB-GYN rotations. Live Action News removed the resident’s name and hospital location to protect her safety and privacy. One day during her training, the resident said a pregnant mother came to the hospital after a failed abortion. The woman, who was between 21 and 23 weeks pregnant, soon went into labor and gave birth to a baby girl, according to the report. “The staff expected the baby to ‘expire’ immediately, but she began crying,” the resident explained. “I walked into my night shift, and the baby lay in a bassinet alone. I asked who the cute baby was, and this is when I was told ‘it’ was an abortion attempt and they were just waiting on ‘it’ to die.” The resident said she listened as the attending OB-GYN criticized pro-life laws and then attempted to justify their lack of care for the baby. The doctor claimed the law allows “palliative care” only, meaning pain management and comfort care until the baby dies. “[The doctor] did not call pediatrics or a rapid response but stated the baby was an abortion attempt and unwanted, so she would provide palliative care to satisfy the law that requires medical care to be provided,” the resident continued. Soon, another resident berated her, saying “it” should be put back in the bassinet “because the nurses need to keep checking on it to document when it dies,” she remembered. The resident said she ignored her co-worker and continued to hold the baby girl in her arms. When a medical emergency called the rest of the team away, she said she took the baby girl to a room where she prayed, sang to her and gave her the name Ada. “I was helpless and there was nothing I could do,” the resident remembered. “She had already been alive at that point a few hours, but without respiratory support, I knew she already was experiencing organ failure.” A few hours later, she said Ada died. Had the baby girl been given the proper medical care and survived, the resident said she gladly would have adopted Ada. Premature babies have survived as early as 21 weeks, and, thanks to advances in medical technology, many are surviving at 23 weeks. The resident said she wants people to understand that babies who survive abortions still are being neglected in hospitals in this country. She said she hopes Ada’s story will “shine a light on what’s happening every day” in the U.S. “I often think about the baby’s mom, too, who heard her baby cry before they rushed the baby from the room. She was later discharged after being treated for complications. I know she is likely suffering, and was left without any support or counseling,” the resident told Live Action. The resident did not mention when Ada was born, but details in her story suggest it may have occurred within the past year. Every year, babies are born alive as a result of botched abortions in America, but no one knows exactly how many. LifeNews recently examined abortion data from seven states between 2020 and 2022 and found reports of 34 babies who were born alive in botched abortions. The numbers almost certainly are much higher; most states do not keep track of abortion survivors. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, as well as the personal testimonies of nurses and abortion survivors themselves, also provide evidence that babies survive abortions. According to the CDC, at least 143 babies were born alive after botched abortions between 2003 and 2014 in the U.S., though there likely are many more. A federal bill, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, would require that babies who survive abortions receive the same medical attention that would be given to any other baby born at the same gestational age. The bill also would punish doctors who allow newborns to die or intentionally kill them after a failed abortion. However, Democrat leaders in Congress have blocked the bill for years.
